Our Story

SocraTea Detroit is a locally owned and operated tea house and artist gallery nestled in the hub of both Detroit's museum district and medical center, just a quick hop from bustling Midtown and the Wayne State University Campus. SocraTea opened on Noel Night 2012 with the mission to serve exceptional tea at fair prices in an inviting environment.

All teas sold at SocraTea are USDA certified organic and fair trade. We are proud of the premium quality classic teas and aromatic tea blends that we carry. Health, environmental awareness, and social justice are issues that matter to us. This begins with selling high-quality teas and ensuring the farmers are paid fairly for their work. We make an effort to cater to dietary restrictions by offering nondairy milk choices and gluten free desserts. When possible, we use natural cleaning products in our business.

SocraTea is also a place to shop for art, ceramics, greeting cards, honey and jams made from local artists and artisans. We have quarterly art openings and are happy to work with Detroit's rich creative community by being a show space for art.

Our Space

SocraTea is a garden-level storefront in the beautifully renovated 71 Garfield building. 71 Garfield is an alternative energy building fueled by geothermal and solar systems and reflects multiple green building practices.

Location: Our shop entrance is on a pedestrian walkway that stretches between Forest and Garfield streets, an area that is also known as the Sugar Hill Arts District. This cultural hub was the center of African American commerce and entertainment during the early 20th century. It is still a center for commerce, home to businesses including Sugar Hill Clay Studio, Detroit is the New Black, and Seva. During business hours external signs also mark our location.

Parking: Free parking is available on Garfield street between Woodward Ave and John R. Free parking is also available in the public parking lot, which can be accessed from through the alley off of John R between Forest and Garfield.

SocraTea Detroit offers public wifi to all paying customers
